The church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood (The Church of the Resurrection) was built on the site where Emperor Alexander II was mortally wounded by a terrorist. Alexander II the Liberator was one of the most prominent statesmen of his time. His social, military and economic reforms turned Russia into a truly great power. The cathedral features Russia’s largest collection of mosaics, including the collection of Russian heraldic mosaics. The section of the street with fragment of the canal iron-cast railing, where the tsar’s blood was spilled, was enclosed within the walls of the church.
