The Palace was built for Prince Alexander Menshikov, one of the closest associates of Peter the Great and the first governor of Saint Petersburg. The Palace has preserved most of its original look and possesses high architectural value, being one of the very first constructions of the city. Unlike Peter the Great, who preferred a modest life, Menshikov was fond of luxury. His palace was the most magnificent building of that time in Russia and therefore hosted ceremonial diplomatic receptions, assemblies and celebrations.
